Sen. Manchin: Trump Jr. Meeting 'Totally Unacceptable'

MSNBC's "Morning Joe"

Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer was "uncalled for," and "totally unacceptable," according to Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"How could you even think that that was a proper meeting to have?" Manchin said, and slammed then-Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort for allowing it. "A campaign manager is totally incompetent to allow that to happen without fighting and threatening to leave if something this egregious happens."

The meeting might have been allowable in the private sector, but not in the public sector, said Manchin, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

"For Donald Jr. to take that type of a meeting, or for him to think it's proper to be in that meeting, it's uncalled for," Manchin said.

"In the private sector, I guess you do whatever. No bars hold. Whatever can give you a competitive advantage. I understand that. But, boy, in the public sector, that is so much different."

Manchin said he understood that opposition research is done in political campaigns.

"But you don't go to the length when you are going to a known adversary such as Russia, [considering] the cold war, the standoff they've had with them for years," Manchin added. "That's something that would be totally unacceptable."

"Trying to make it political is the wrong approach to take, because you have Republicans speaking out. They're aghast also," Manchin said, referring to Trump Jr.'s supporters saying Democrats were making a controversy out of nothing.

"We haven't sunk that low. I know we're getting close to the bottom, but thank God, we haven't hit it yet. To have this as acceptable behavior is wrong. Just wrong," the senator added.

Trump Jr. should appear before the intelligence committee and explain his actions, Manchin said. If Trump Jr. said he made a mistake and thought the rules in the public sector were the same as in the private sector, Manchin said that would be more acceptable.

"It wouldn't be acceptable, but it would be more explanation to me, that you're having a hard time transitioning," Manchin said.

"There are certain things you just can't do in the public sector. You have to learn that. They might learn the hard way here, but there's not people going to be backing off, and I think Republicans feel the same way as Democrats."

The senator also spoke to Bloomberg on Tuesday on the topic of the Trump Jr. meeting.

"It's not acceptable," he said. "It's a shame that politics has dropped to that low."
