Mom Delivers On-Air Scolding to Pundit Sons on C-SPAN

Republican pundit Dallas Woodhouse and his brother, Brad, who is a Democrat, may sit on opposite sides of the political fence, but they have one thing in common: a mother who isn't afraid to call C-SPAN and scold them for squabbling on the air.

The Woodhouse brothers were on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" this week to talk about their new documentary program Woodhouse Divided, reports NPR.

Dallas Woodhouse, who is the president of Carolina Rising, and Brad Woodhouse, the president of the liberal group Americans United for Change, were just settling in for an argument on bipartisanship when their mother picked up the phone. The woman identified herself as "Joy" from Raleigh, North Carolina, and the brothers were happy to hear that the caller was from down south, until they heard her voice, reports The Washington Times.

"Oh God, it’s Mom," said Dallas, hiding his face. His brother, in a separate studio, also hid his face when he heard her come on the phone to say: "You’re right, I’m from down south, and I’m your mother."

And she told them that she hoped they would get their fighting out of their systems on the show.

"I disagree that many families are like ours," their mother told them. "I don’t know many families that are fighting at Thanksgiving. I was very glad that this Thanksgiving was a year you two were supposed to go to your in-laws. I’m hoping you’ll have some of this out of your system when you come here for Christmas. I would really like a peaceful Christmas, and I love you both."

Host Steve Scully asked Mrs. Woodhouse what it was like when the boys were growing up, pointing out that she had called in on the public line and that her call had not been expected.

"It hasn't been easy," she admitted.

The pundits' mother told Scully that both she and their father love politics and that they follow the entire country, so "we have to take responsibility for them," but that doesn't mean she wants to hear their squabbles over Christmas dinner.

"They're both very passionate in what they believe, and I love that about them," she said, "but I hope they get this out of their system on your program."

As for the mother, she said she is a registered Democrat who sometimes votes for Republican candidates.

For now, though, she is for "the party that is going to expand Medicaid, who is going to expand healthcare," as she has an autistic grandson. "I guess I am more of a one-issue person."
