The B Street Band announced Monday it is pulling out of Thursday night's Garden State Presidential Inaugural Gala in Washington, D.C., out of respect for Bruce Springsteen, Backstreets.com reported.

The band, which is a Springsteen cover group, said it made the decision after the scheduled performance sparked national news due to the rock star's harsh criticism of President-elect Donald Trump.

"Our decision is based SOLELY on the respect and gratitude we have for Bruce and the E Street Band," founder Will Forte, said in a statement.

Forte said they were hired for the event in 2013, long before it was known who would be president.

"We're a non-political band," Forte told Rolling Stone. "The B-Street Band have played dozen of shows for both political parties for decades."

Springsteen said in an interview on Marc Maron's WTF podcast Trump has caused great harm to the nation.

"When you let that genie out of the bottle – bigotry, racism, intolerance – they don't go back in the bottle that easily if they go back in at all," Springsteen said. "Whether it's a rise in hate crimes, people feeling they have license to speak and behave in ways that previously were considered un-American and are un-American. That's what he's appealing to. My fears are that those things find a place in ordinary, civil society and the country changes in a way that is unrecognizable, and we become estranged."
