Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is pushing to get more border patrol agents and law enforcement officers hired for Customs and Border Protection, according to The Hill.

Around 1,700 border patrol agent positions and 1,000 Customs and Border Protection officer positions have not been filled, The Hill's report said.

Passing a polygraph test has been a requirement since 2013, which has resulted in only 1 percent of applicants getting hired, according to The Hill.

Flake, in a letter to Jim Comey, Federal Bureau of Investigation director, asked for help with successfully administering the test, since the FBI also requires that job applicants pass a polygraph exam.

"The problems related to the polygraph appear to be unique to the CBP," Flake said in his letter to Comey, according to The Hill.

The Arizona senator has looked into other ways to address the hiring shortfalls at the Border Patrol, including a bill that would waive polygraph tests if applicants already have military or law enforcement experience, according to The Arizona Republic in March.

"We have just been having a heck of a time trying to get the Border Patrol to hit its hiring numbers. They get 6,500 to 7,000 applications and then they hire fewer than 600 people, less than 1 percent. The failure rates on the lie detector tests, or polygraphs, are just out of control . . . we hear horror stories all the time," Flake told the Arizona Republic.
