Once left for extinct after the 2010 midterms, Blue Dogs are trying in earnest to regain a foothold within the Democratic Party, Politico reported.

After a shellacking in the election, 18 Democrats who count themselves as Blue Dogs are trying to offer Americans an alternative to the progressive side of the party, leaders told Politico.

And the key to regaining a majority in the House is the Blue Dogs, they believe.

"For the first time since I've been in Congress, the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) has partnered with the Blue Dog Coalition so that we're recruiting candidates who fit districts that we need to win to take back the majority," Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., told Politico. "We are able to convince folks who normally wouldn't vote for a Democrat to vote for this Democrat."

Blue Dog Coalition co-chairs Henry Cuellar of Texas, Jim Costa of California, and Dan Lipinski of Illinois are building blocks — meeting with the Trump administration, working on tax reform as well as supporting vulnerable Senate Democrats — for what they hope will be a transformative shift in the 2018 midterms.

"On the core issues that really reflect the Democratic Party, we have far, far more in common," Costa told Politico. "We are the bridge in trying to bring about bipartisan efforts and certainly the key, I think . . . if the Democrats are ever going to get into the majority again."
