Some key liberals think New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is seeking reelection this year, needs to go, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"We want to see a change of course," said Jonathan Westin, executive director of New York Communities for Change.

"If not, a lot of folks on the left will not be in a position to support the mayor," he said. "As we've seen in the current political climate, anything can happen. Folks can come out of nowhere."

On issues of homelessness, policing and affordable housing, critics say de Blasio is running the city into the ground. There were 60,000 people sleeping in city shelters this year, a record high.

There's also the nagging federal and state probe into de Blasio's fundraising for state Senate elections. The mayor is being investigated for allegedly trading government favors for political donations during his time in office.

The question is, who would run against de Blasio?

"Everybody is talking about it. People call all the time saying, 'Who's going to run against him?'" one Democratic strategist told the WSJ. "There's a good number of people who are very enthusiastic about trying to defeat him and are very frustrated they can't do it."

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is being urged to run by Democratic donors, but hasn't publicly said anything about putting her name in for a shot.
