Sanders: Trump's Energy Order an 'International Embarrassment'

By    |   Wednesday, 29 Mar 2017 01:24 PM

President Donald Trump's order suspending more than a half-dozen measures to boost domestic energy production is an "international embarrassment" that endangers the country's future, Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday.

"Mr. President, listen to scientists," the Vermont independent and 2016 presidential candidate told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "Climate change is real, and it is already causing a devastating problem around the world . . . I worry very much about the planet the future generations will inherit."

Sanders also disagreed that Trump's executive order will eventually mean millions of jobs, including restoring the country's coal industry.

"The corporate world understands the future is in sustainable energy, and most of the new investments are going into solar, which is exploding all over our country and all over the world," Sanders said. "I will, along with many of my colleagues, do everything that we can to move this country in a very, very different direction than he is proposing."

Sanders also Wednesday said he wants to work with Trump on decreasing the prices of prescription drugs and on rebuilding the nation's infrastructure, and called on the president to keep his campaign promises on the issues.

During his campaign, Sanders said, Trump promised great healthcare options for all, but then backed the American Health Care Act.

"If that's his idea of a great healthcare program, I don't see us working together in that area," Sanders said.

"There is one major country on Earth that does not guarantee healthcare to all people as a right, the United States," Sanders said, pointing out that the United States spends double what Great Britain does because of insurance companies.

"For them, their goal is not to provide quality across effective healthcare, but to make as much money as they possibly can out of human suffering," Sanders said. "This is not just a Republican problem. It is a Democratic problem. Neither party has had the guts to stand up to the insurance companies and do what I need to do, a Medicare for all single-payer program."

Such a program, said Sanders, will save the country hundreds of billions of dollars compared about what's being spent now."

Sanders also said he's already introduced legislation for infrastructure projects around the country, and that his plan could help accomplish Trump's goals of spending $1 trillion on infrastructure investment.

"I think that's an area [where] we can work together," Sanders said.

Sanders also spoke out about Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, saying he won't be voting for the federal judge because he does not agree with his views on abortion and voter suppression, and he finds his views to be "very, very right wing."

He also believes it should take at least 60 votes for Gorsuch to be confirmed, and that the "nuclear option" should not be deployed.

Sanders also on Wednesday said he agrees with the decision of new Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez to seek resignation letters from all staffers, as the committee "absolutely" needs a massive overhaul.

"In terms of how it does business, it has failed," said Sanders. "The evidence is obvious. It is not just that we lost the White House and the U.S. Senate and House. We lost 900 legislative seats in the last eight our nine years. The party needs a top-down overhaul."
