Sen. Bernie Sanders gave the Democratic National Committee $100,000 in May after butting heads with the organization last year during the contentious presidential campaign.

Politico reports that Sanders, who joined DNC chairman Tom Perez during a tour of the country that visited nine states this year, used money left over from his 2016 presidential campaign to fund the six-figure donation. That bank account has $5.3 million left.

It's worth noting that Sanders backed Rep. Keith Ellison's bid to lead the DNC, and Ellison supported Sanders for president. Sanders repeatedly criticized the party last year amid allegations that it favored Hillary Clinton for president.

The Sanders campaign also sued the DNC in 2015 over access to voter data. He continues to talk ill of the party to this day.

"The current model and the current strategy of the Democratic Party is an absolute failure," Sanders said during a speech this month, Politico reports. "The Democratic Party must finally understand which side it is on, and that cannot be the side of Wall Street, or the fossil fuel industry, or the drug companies."

Sanders reaffirmed his political status as an independent in April.
