Sen. Sasse: Repeal Obamacare First, Replace Later

If Republicans can come to a deal on replacing Obamacare in the near future, they need to repeal it first and then get to work replacing it, Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said Friday.

"To date, we've been trying to do these two things at once, and not been making enough progress. I still hope that process could work, but most people are leaving D.C. today to go home for the Fourth of July weekend," Sasse told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"If we don't get this resolved by Monday of the next week, July 10, if there isn't a combined repeal-and-replace plan, I'm writing a letter to the president this morning urging him to call on us to separate them," he added.

The senator said the votes are there for Republicans to repeal Obamacare, so they should get that done.

"Every Republican in the U.S. Senate except for one has already voted for repeal in the past. Let's do that first, if we can't do them together. Let's do as much repeal as we can, then let's have the president ask us to cancel our Aug. 8 state work period, and then stay here and then work on replace separate," Sasse said.

Sasse released the text of his letter to the president on his website.

However, aides to Senate Republicans have said that repealing then replacing is "not going to happen."
