Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is giving Donald Trump an assist in the state of New York, asking the Board of Elections to void any votes given to him in Tuesday's primary.

The move helps Trump because he needs 50 percent of the vote in as many districts as possible to earn many of the 95 delegate votes up for grabs. Trump's support in the Empire State is just over 50 percent, according to the latest poll figures.

The Journal News has a copy of a letter sent by Carson, who exited the presidential race in early March, to New York's Board of Elections.

Carson announced his support of Trump last month. Any votes for him in Tuesday's primary could potentially dip Trump under the 50-percent mark.

In New York, according to The Journal News, candidates who win 50 percent of the vote in a congressional district earn all three of the delegate votes up for grabs in that particular district. If no one earns 50 percent, whoever finishes second with at least 20 percent of the vote gets one delegate vote.

New York has 27 congressional districts.

Trump is a resident of New York and his business, The Trump Organization, is based in Manhattan. The New York Post  endorsed him in the Republican race last week.
