Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Thursday that Donald Trump "is probably going to stop" attacking the federal judge presiding over the civil fraud trial involving Trump University.

"He is probably going to stop doing that," Carson, who endorsed the presumptive nominee shortly after quitting the race in March, told Jake Tapper on CNN. "He's come to the conclusion himself that self-inflicted wounds just impede your progress."

Trump has slammed U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego, saying that his Mexican heritage is impeding the developer's ability to get a fair trial in the case.

Carson told Tapper that "people will see that Donald Trump will really start answering questions … and really refocus on what's important, because right now our nation is in incredible economic trouble.

"We have issues with people who want to destroy us, educational issues, 71 percent of people between the ages of 17 and 24 who apply to the military are rejected principally for educational reasons," he said. "These things have huge implications."
