Former President Barack Obama is planning to once again get actively involved in Democratic politics in the fall, but avoid becoming the face of the party, The Hill reports.

While re-emerging on the national political scene, Obama wants to stay away from being "a foil" for President Donald Trump and GOP leaders.

He is expected to get even more involved in fundraising as he looks to help his party rebuild, advisers close to the former president tell the Hill.

"He has to be careful," said Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University. "At a moment when President Trump's approval is falling so fast — including with his base — there is a risk for Obama taking center stage and triggering the energy that many Republicans currently lack."

And Trump has continued to go after the former president.

Trump has tried to blame the opioid epidemic on the Obama administration, The Washington Post noted.

"They looked at this scourge and they let it go by," the president said.

And on Thursday, Trump retweeted a poll showing 61 percent of respondents saying he is a better president than Obama. The New York Daily News reported the survey came from Progress Polls, a "mysterious" Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Obama is committed to campaign for Democrat Ralph Northam, who is running for governor of Virginia, the Hill reported. He is expected to get involved in other races, as well.

"Pundits are always going to overthink and overanalyze the pros and cons of having a former president on the campaign trail, but the truth is, there's little downside, Democratic strategist David Wade said. He has unique convening powers to draw a crowd, energize Democrats, make a closing argument, and then it is up to candidates to close the deal."
