Defense attorneys were stunned Tuesday at Donald Trump Jr.'s public statements and Twitter posts about last year's meeting with a lawyer backed by the Russian government — saying that his actions over the past two days might cause difficulties for months to come.

"He's stupid for saying what he said about why he took the meeting," Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor now in private criminal defense practice, told The Daily Beast.

"It's very hard for me to believe that any lawyer would advise him to make a public statement containing factual assertions about what happened in a meeting with an agent of the Russian government," Mariotti added.

"What's more likely is that Donald Trump Jr. spoke without consulting legal counsel."

Mariotti was referring to Trump Jr.'s confirmation to The New York Times in its report Sunday of the Trump Tower meeting with the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskay.

The newspaper reported Monday that Trump Jr. had hoped to receive damaging information about Hillary Clinton in the meeting, which also was attended by Jared Kushner, his brother-in-law, and Paul Manafort, who was his father's campaign manager.

"After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Mrs. Clinton," Trump Jr. told the Times for the Sunday report.

"Her statements were vague, ambiguous, and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered.

"It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information."

Trump Jr. also released emails Tuesday that he had exchanged before the meeting saying that Moscow's government his father in the presidential campaign and was trying to damage Clinton.

Further, Trump Jr. speaking for himself was unwise, said Scott Greenfield, a New York criminal defense attorney, compared with Kushner's lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, who has represented her client since his alleged Russia links were first reported.

Trump Jr. now has a lawyer, identified by Reuters as Alan Futerfas, who has extensive criminal defense experience in New York.

"A good lawyer would have advised him to stop talking, stop tweeting, stop giving comments of any type or description until we have a firm grasp of what all the facts are," Greenfield told the Daily Beast.

"Regardless of anything, you don't go shooting off your mouth until you have a clear idea of what's at stake.

"He doesn't have any intention of following his lawyer's instructions," Greenfield continued. "It seems remarkably typical of what is coming out of the administration, from a legal viewpoint.

"It's insanely asinine."
