Andrew Card: Name Alone Could Keep Jeb Bush From White House

Jeb Bush's biggest liability is his name, says former top White House aide Andrew Card.

"I'm convinced if his name was John Ellis and he had the same resume, everybody would say he should be president of the United States," the former chief of staff to President George W. Bush tells the The Washington Post.

"The fact that he's John Ellis Bush — Jeb — means that he is carrying biases of the past, and some of those biases are very positive, they are an asset.

"Some of the biases are liabilities."

Card's comments came Tuesday in College Station, Tex., after he moderated a discussion with his former boss at the unveiling of "41: A Portrait of My Father," a biography of George H.W. Bush.

Card tells The Post he's convinced Jeb Bush would "be the best president" among the possible prospective candidates.

He's not alone.

"I think he would be the best candidate on the Republican side," said Beverley Russell, of Bryan, Tex. while Kyle Smith, of College Station, called a White House run for the ex-Florida governor a "great idea."

"If that's what he wants to do, I hope he does," Smith told The Post. "There's clearly a lot of support there, a lot of backing that no other individual could have."

Bush is still on the fence about a run, but he "quit worrying . . . a long time ago" about his father's and brother's political legacies.

Yet his name recognition is what puts him near the top of prospective GOP candidates in a Washington Post/ABC News poll, the newspaper reports.

The survey found Bush would place second in a field with Mitt Romney, but first, with 15 percent support, if Romney weren't in the mix.

"[S]ome large chunk of that support, at least at this point in the race, is dependent on the fact that people know his name," The Post reports.
