Former Vice President Al Gore is calling for single-payer healthcare just days after an attempt to pass a GOP bill to replace Obamacare collapsed, the HuffPost reported.

"The private sector has not shown any ability to provide good, affordable healthcare for all," Gore told a crowd at Borough of Manhattan Community College on Tuesday. "I believe we ought to have single-payer healthcare."

He said health insurance companies have not offered cost-effective coverage, even under Obamacare, according to the HuffPost.

Gore maintained a government-run, single-payer system would provide taxpayer-funded basic healthcare coverage for everyone.

And The Intercept reports many healthcare activists are now backing a single-payer system, which would set up one public health insurance program.

Max Fine, a member of President John Kennedy's Medicare Task Force, said Medicare was not intended to cover just the elderly, The Intercept reported.

Fine noted the movement for single payer healthcare has "risen and fallen over the years.
