Schiff: Sessions' Explanations 'Simply Not Credible'

Attorney General Jeff Sessions' explanations about his connections with a Russian ambassador were "simply not credible," and he should step down from his job, Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, said Friday.

"It's a conclusion I reached reluctantly," Schiff told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "I think it's a big deal when you ask someone like the attorney general to step down. But I found his explanation simply not credible. You don't, I think, treat a visit in your office by the Russian ambassador as something casual, something not memorable. "

Further, Sessions should have disclosed his contacts with the Russians when asked during his confirmation hearings, Schiff said, and he thinks the attorney general knows he should have disclosed all contacts.

The standard that should be held isn't about perjury, Schiff continued, but about whether he can carry out his responsibilities with the cloud of a Russian investigation hanging over him and the Justice Department.

"I don't think we'll have the confidence that the decisions are being made, and the recusal that he announced is only a partial recusal," Schiff said. "It would not, for example, necessarily cover [former national security adviser] Mike Flynn, whose conduct in terms of his conversations with the ambassador went after the election as well as before."

Schiff said he is also concerned that one of Sessions' meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak took place in September, when Russians were engaged in an active campaign to disrupt the 2016 presidential election.

"He is one of the most prominent and was one of the most prominent proxies for the president ahead of his national security team," Schiff said. "The suggestion, as he was making over the last 24 hours that, no, he was being met within his capacity as a member of the Armed Services Committee, simply not credible."

Kislyak went to see Sessions, not any other committee member, because he wanted to "curry favor or learn information from someone who had potentially the next president's ear."
