Rep. Kinzinger to Trump: Don't Emulate Obama on Afghan Troop Buildup

President Donald Trump should not worry about numbers regarding a troop buildup in Afghanistan but rather do what is necessary, a GOP lawmaker said Friday.

During an appearance on Fox News, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., warned against Trump taking a page from former President Barack Obama's book and choosing a number of troops based on how it looks.

"I've heard from anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 on our side, 3,000 on NATO. The number to me is irrelevant," Kinzinger said. "What actually matters is, we need the capacity to do with the mission calls for.

"If you remember under President Obama, it was like 9,800 troops, 200 shy of 10,000 because it was four figures instead of five. We need to not play those games. We need to say whatever is necessary for train and equip, taking out Al Qaeda where they exist, strikes against the Taliban, and ensuring that ISIS cannot get a stronger foothold in Afghanistan while we build the national government."

A Trump administration official said earlier this month the U.S. plans to send several thousand more troops to Afghanistan to help in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

"When President Obama announced a surge but then said 18 months later we are going to be coming home . . . you saw on the ground a lot of attempts to build relationships just ended," Kinzinger said. "These senior elders from the villages would walk away and say, look, you are not staying. So that announcement, pulling the troops out, had a devastating effect."
