FEC: Parties Can Raise Funds for Franken, Coleman

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Federal Election Commission says national party committees for Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken can raise funds to help offset expenses connected to the Minnesota Senate recount and trial.

In an advisory opinion issued Friday, the FEC said the national committees can set up special accounts that would be used only to pay for recount and lawsuit-related expenses.

The accounts would be separate from other fundraising efforts - so donors who already contributed the maximum could give again to the new account.

Donations to the recount and trial funds would be limited to $30,400 for an individual and $15,000 for a political committee.

After a statewide recount, Franken led by 225 votes. Coleman contested the recount and the issue is before a three-judge panel.
