Rehabilitation specialist Dr. Ian Smith said that through his Super Shred Diet, individuals can lose 20 pounds in four weeks through calorie disruption and negative energy balance.

Smith told the hosts of "The Doctors" that Super Shred is a "healthy crash diet" that trains the stomach to accept less food at each sitting. He stressed on the website the importance of portion control and how it can play a critical role in weight loss.

Smith recently came out with the book "Super Shred: The Big Results Diet," which was released last Tuesday.

"Three things a diet should be: It should be simple, it should not be expensive and lastly, it should be straightforward," Smith said.

Super Shred is an accelerated version of Smith's Shred diet program. He said this past summer, a group that lost weight with the original Shred program, tried the Super Shred.

"The plan combines three strategies into one program," Smith wrote in a Chicago Sun-Times column. "(The plan includes) sliding nutrient density, which means toward the latter half of the day, you should consume most of your calories from plant-based foods rather than animal-based; calorie disruption, which means varying the calories you consume from day to day and week to week; and negative energy balance, which means putting your body in a state of energy need, driving it to extract energy from fat stores.

"After four weeks — July 4th holiday included — the average weight loss was 20 pounds. Thus was born a program purposely designed for those who need or want to quickly lose weight without putting their health at risk," Smith continued.
