Conservative television talk show host Joe Scarborough agreed Thursday with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich that Republicans need to quit complaining and come up with initiatives of their own to replace Obamacare and challenge other policies and programs being pushed by the president.

Recalling the so-called Republican revolution in 1994 spearheaded by Gingrich that returned control of Congress to the GOP for the first time in 45 years, the former Florida congressman and host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" said, "We had alternatives. So, when we ran, not only could we win, we could govern."

"Just saying we're going to shut down the government, just saying what we're against, is not going to lead us back to winning the Senate. Most importantly, winning back the White House in 2016,"said Scarborough, who was elected to Congress in 1994 and served until 2001.

"I'm glad that Newt Gingrich is saying what he's saying. Because, you know what, I've been saying it for years. You can't beat something with nothing," he added.

Scarborough was referring to a speech Gingrich gave Wednesday in Boston at a meeting of the Republican National Committee, during which he said he was willing to bet that the GOP congressman would have "zero answer" if asked by constituents what their "positive replacement for Obamacare" would be.

"Part of what we have to do in the era of Obama's disaster, we have to get beyond being anti-Obama," he told his fellow Republicans, "and we have to re-convince people you can have hope in America, we can have a better future."
