Pat Buchanan: Obama Blundered By Calling Terrorist Attack Failure

By Paul Scicchitano and John Bachman   |   Wednesday, 24 Apr 2013 07:24 AM

Conservative columnist and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan tells Newsmax TV that President Obama committed something of a blunder last week when he characterized the Boston Marathon bombing attack as a failure by the terrorists.

“I understand why he said what he was saying. I’m not going to fault him for doing it. But in reality — from the standards and from the viewpoints of the terrorists — this was the most successful terrorist attack on the United States since 9/11,” asserted Buchanan in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.

Story continues below.

“You had two individuals — one of them a teenager — had transfixed and mesmerized the country for a full week,” he continued. “They forced the president to repeatedly come to the podium at the White House. They had the governor of Massachusetts come to the podium repeatedly. They had all the police forces of an entire area preoccupied, and they forced the shutdown of the great city of Boston and many communities near it for 12 hours.”

From 1966 through 1974, Buchanan was an assistant to President Nixon, and from 1985 to 1987, he served as White House Director of Communications under President Reagan.

He insisted that it’s difficult for President Obama to somehow make the case that the terrorists failed in Boston.

“From the standpoint of a terrorist attack, they made themselves famous,” he explained. “They did a horrendous thing. They shocked and horrified our part of the world and probably thrilled our enemies abroad, so it’s hard to say that these two individuals failed in what they set out to do. They succeeded.”

Unfortunately, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is now facing federal terrorism charges, and his 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, who was killed in a shootout with police, will probably only encourage similar copycat attacks, according to Buchanan, who sought the presidency three times.

“These individuals have set an example and I’m afraid they have inspired sick souls like themselves, nihilistic people like themselves, to go out in a blaze of glory like these individuals did,” insisted Buchanan, who also said that America must get control of its border to limit future terrorist attacks.

“No question, we’ve got to get control of our border or we’re going to cease to be a country very, very soon,” he said.

He acknowledged that he doesn’t understand the argument for extending a “blanket pardon or a blanket amnesty” to the millions of illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

“Why do we give a blanket amnesty to these people, it escapes me,” he asks.
