While Osama bin Laden was being killed by U.S. Navy SEALS in May 2011, President Barack Obama was playing cards in another part of the White House with four other members of his staff, the president's former personal assistant said on Wednesday.

"It was a very long day," Reggie Love said during an interview at an event sponsored by the nonprofit Artists and Athletes Alliance at the University of California-Los Angeles. "I spent the entire day at the White House.

"Most people were, like, down in the Situation Room and [President Obama] was, like: 'I’m not going to be down there. I can’t watch this entire thing.' We must have played 15 games of spades," Love said.

Bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011, in a raid on his compound in Pakistan by Navy SEALS. After the raid, U.S. forces took the al-Qaida leader's body to Afghanistan for identification, then buried it at sea within 24 hours of his death.

Obama watched parts of the raid in the Situation Room with members of his national security staff. Others in the room included Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Known as Obama's "body man," Love left the White House last year. He said that he, Obama, and three other staff members played cards during portions of the raid in the White House dining room.
