An Algerian-born Muslim who is raising eyebrows on his college campus as a strong advocate for Israel says he took the controversial position because he was tired of the rants of "crazy" Islamists.

"Frankly, I was just sick and tired of whenever I turned on the TV, [there was] an Arab, either a crazy dictator or a crazy Islamist," Abdel Bioud, a graduate student at McGill University in Montreal, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"So I decided to take matters in my own hands and I joined the McGill Students for Israel [Association], specifically for that," he said Wednesday.

But when Bioud wrote an article about his views and sent it to the McGill Daily, a student newspaper, the paper refused to publish it.

"At the end of the day, if the Palestinians . . . would just stop launching rockets and just build a country that stands for freedom, individual liberties, respect for the rule of law, prosperity would be there in a heartbeat and things will be great," he said.

Bioud said his advocacy is rooted in his childhood.

"I was born in Algeria, and I went through a civil war there and at a time, both of my parents were executives. They were working but they were also involved politically and they were trying to get religion out of politics. So we got harassed, death threats, etc.," he said.

"I've been hearing why don't moderate Muslims or Arabs speak up?

"The problem is, if you are, say, in Algeria or any other Arab country, if you want freedom or democracy, the government shoots at you. And if you want to grab a beer after a long day of work, the Islamists shoot at you. So, you're trapped."
