Conservatives reacted with anger on Friday to the release of new details about how the State Department altered talking points to scrub any mention of terrorist links to the deadly Benghazi attacks.
And they increased pressure on House Speaker John Boehner to insist on a select committee to investigate the entire handling of the assault on the U.S. consulate in which four Americans were killed.
Sen. Jim Inhofe said the cover-up is among the worst ever.
"The Pentagon Papers, Iran-Contra, Watergate, all the rest of them — this . . . is going to go down as the most egregious cover-up in American history,” the Oklahoman said.
On Rusty Humphries' radio program, Inhofe said it won't be long before talk of impeachment is rebounding through the corridors of Washington. "People may be starting to use the I-word before too long," he said.

Bob Adams, president of the super PAC Revive America USA, told Newsmax everything about the events of Sept. 11 appeared troubling. "At its very core, it is an American principle that we don’t leave our men on the battlefield to die at the hands of the enemy," he said.
“At the end of the day, someone gave an order to leave our men behind. We need to know who gave that order.”
Nearly 140 members — or 60 percent of the House Republican Conference – have signed onto a resolution circulated by Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia aimed at forcing Boehner to create a special panel.
"In the last few days the public has learned stunning new revelations about the Benghazi terrorist attack and the Obama administration's troubling response in the hours and days that followed," Wolf wrote in a letter to Boehner.
"Much of this new information has come as brave whistleblowers have sought to right the record and, in doing so, may have jeopardized their careers. Increasingly it is becoming clear that we have only scratched the tip of the iceberg."
Boehner has argued that the heads of the Oversight, Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, Intelligence and Judiciary committees — who recently produced an interim report of an investigation that they are conducting — are handling the matter and that a select committee is unnecessary and would be expensive.
Following a hearing this week by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee with State Department whistleblowers, Boehner called on the White House to release all emails between a State Department official and the Libyan consulate following the terror attack for more details.
But, Adams told Newsmax, any new emails, in addition to those obtained by ABC News, still would not be enough.
“It’s a joke, a total joke, if Speaker Boehner thinks that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are just going hand over the emails or hand over the information,” Adams said. “What we saw at Wednesday’s hearing is going to be a flash in the pan without follow up.”
Sophomore Rep. Bill Huizenga of Michigan told Newsmax the State Department hijacked the truth for political purposes by scrubbing the talking points.
“The fact that they are trying to pull the truth out of these things while the families — not to mention the American people — are looking for answers is ridiculous,” Huizenga said.
“The truth just ought to be out as the truth, not just the State Department hijacking this for political purposes.
ABC said the vital paragraphs were removed because the State Department worried they could be used by Republicans to attack the Obama administration and the way the response to the attack was handled. Instead, officials claimed it was a spontaneous demonstration against an obscure Internet video clip that had gotten out of hand.
Huizenga called that "outrageous."
“My recollection is that at the time there were military leaders and leaders in different agencies who were casting doubt on this whole notion of this being a spontaneous response to protests and characterizing it as a terrorist attack,” Huizenga said.
“Pretty clearly, the State Department wanted that out for political reasons,” he continued. “Can you imagine being a State Department contractor, you just watched your buddies getting killed, and knowing that the State Department is obfuscating the truth?”
