Donald Trump is exploring ways to acquire the New York Times, New York Magazine reports.

Sources familiar with the situation told the magazine’s Joe Hagan that Trump has engaged in more than one meeting to discuss how he might buy the newspaper.

Hagan said details of Trump’s strategy "remain scant" and neither the developer or the newspaper would comment.

"It seems unlikely, to say the least, that the Sulzberger family, which controls the company's voting shares, would welcome his offer," Hagan added.

Trump is not the only billionaire who has expressed interest in buying the Times. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who owns his own media empire, has been rumored as a potential purchaser if the Sulzbergers ever sell.

Some media observers have suggested the Times might need a white knight in the future.

Last October, the company reported an 85 percent decline in net earnings for the third quarter on a continued fall in advertising. The Times has resorted to staff layoffs and buyouts to help its finances.

Trump has scrapped with the Times in the past.

In 2011, columnist Gail Collins slammed Trump's ongoing birther campaign against President Barack Obama and dubbed him "the man who can make Bill O'Reilly look like the most sensible guy in the room."

New York Magazine said that criticism prompted Trump to fire off a letter to the editor claiming Collins' "storytelling ability and word usage (coming from me, who has written many bestsellers), is not at a very high level. More importantly, her facts are wrong!"
