Cuccinelli: GOP Comeback Hinges on Pushing Less Government

By Bill Hoffmann   |   Wednesday, 08 May 2013 06:58 PM

Republicans — who plummeted into a pit of despair with the crushing defeat of Mitt Romney last year — can rebound by fighting the good fight for less government, Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli says.

And Cuccinelli, the Old Dominion State's Attorney General, told "The Steve Malzberg Show'' on Newsmax TV he is confident that that will happen.

Story continues below.

"After we lost in 2012 — Virginia's a swing state — a lot of people were very depressed. 'Oh, Ken, what do we do now?''' said Cuccinelli, 44.

"And my answer was, we show the way. We show the way. We lead by example.''

And leading by example, Cuccinelli explained, means Republicans must convince the nation about how the continuing growth of government in people's lives, the latest example being Obamacare, is not the answer.

"When the American people come around to the notion that, gee, you know, this bigger and bigger government really isn't working, then they're going to look around say, well, what does work?'' he said.

"And we need to have readymade, Republican-led, pro-growth, smaller government examples to hold up and say, this is how you do this; this is the best way for America.''

Cuccinelli, who in a newly-released poll from NBC News and Marist College, is running neck-in-neck with former Democratic Party Chairman Terry McAuliffe, said that message begins locally.

"I tell people in Virginia that the greatest resource we have in Virginia is Virginians,'' Cuccinelli said.

"And the best thing government can do is get out of their way.''
