Ryan Voices Doubt About Obama Submitting Budget on Time

By Sandy Fitzgerald   |   Thursday, 10 Jan 2013 09:05 AM

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan is voicing doubts as to whether President Barack Obama will hit the legal deadline for submitting his budget to Congress.
Under federal law, Obama must submit a budget by the first Monday in February, but he’s only met that deadline once, reports The Hill. The Senate last passed a budget resolution in 2009.
Ryan, R-Wis., said in a letter to Acting Budget Director Jeff Ziants he is concerned about the budget timing because of the “critical importance of addressing our nation’s fiscal problems,” and wants to know if the budget is once again late, when he and other officials can expect Obama’s requests.

A source in the Obama administration said no decisions have yet been made on the budget timing. Meanwhile, New Year’s Eve’s fiscal cliff deal, which raises taxes over 10 years and delays a 2013 budget sequester by two months, is causing problems with the annual budget process.
A fight over the nation’s $16.4 trillion debt ceiling is looming, with Republicans demanding Obama propose entitlement cuts to offset debt increases, so Obama’s budget will likely become part of those arguments.
Ryan’s office noted Obama has missed the February budget deadline more than any president since the 1920s. The budget concerns coincide as Obama’s budget director and chief of staff Jack Lew is expected to be named as Obama’s nominee for Secretary of the Treasury.
Lew’s potential nomination is already being attacked, with Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, ranking member on the Senate Budget Committee, complaining Lew is unfit because of what he and other opponents call misleading comments over Obama’s 2012 budget.
