Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner is tapping into Bill and Hillary Clinton's fundraising network and is leading other Democratic contenders in raising money for his New York City mayoral campaign.

Weiner raised more than any other candidate in the crowded race in the last two months, pulling in a total of more than $800,000, according to The Wall Street Journal. That was $200,000 more than the next-highest fundraiser, former city comptroller Bill Thompson.

Much of his fundraising success can be credited to his wife, Huma Abedin, who, as a long-time adviser to Hillary Clinton, has been able to draw on the Clinton donor base. Until recently, Abedin had been staying below the radar since her husband was forced to resign from Congress after sending lewd pictures to women he met online.

The funds mean that Weiner, who had more than $4 million left over in his campaign account from an aborted 2009 mayoral run, will be in a position to spend close to the $6.7 million cap in the Democratic primary for candidates who participate in the city's public-financing program — a significant accomplishment given he joined the race relatively late.

A recent Quinnipiac University poll found Weiner has the backing of 25 percent of likely Democratic primary voters, compared to 22 percent for the longtime frontrunner, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn; 11 percent for Thompson; 10 percent for Public Advocate Bill de Blasio; and 7 percent for Comptroller John Liu.
