A new report warning that preservatives and coloring in soda can increase the risk of lung cancer is something to heed carefully, according to Dr. David Samadi, chairman of urology and chief of robotic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital.

"Our food chain is completely contaminated, and with all these corn syrups and sugar and now we see these preservatives and coloring in sodas, we've got to be careful," Samadi told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"They looked at about 100 random sodas in cans and sugar drinks across the U.S. … and they're finding that instead of having a small amount, some of these cans contain three to four times the amount … and some rat studies [showed an increased] risk of lung cancer.

"We need to see more human studies, but the truth is that we're getting too much of some of the stuff that's not good for us … This is another reason to really stay away and replace [soda with] juice and water and other things," Samadi said.

The study by Consumer Reports tested dozens of various brands of soda for levels of the artificial chemical used for coloring called 4-methylimidazole (4-MeI).
