MSNBC was crushed by the competition in its coverage of the George Zimmerman verdict.

Not only was the channel beaten by both FoxNews and CNN but CNN's sister network HLN also topped the liberal news channel, the tracking site TV By The Numbers reports.

According to Neilsen's preliminary numbers, Fox won Saturday night's 10 pm hour when the verdict came down with 3.68 million viewers, followed by CNN with 3.41 million, HLN with 2.2 million and MSNBC with 1.3 million.

However CNN was tops when it came to the coveted 25-54 age group that advertisers love, followed by Fox and HLN with MSNBC again a distant fourth.

Although it bills itself as "the place for politics," MSNBC shifted to nonstop coverage of the Zimmerman trial in an effort to stop the dramatic ratings drop it has seen since the 2012 election, according to the National Journal.

Overall, the Zimmerman trial result was a ratings winner for cable, noted Media Bistro. "The numbers for all the channels are many times higher than the typical cable news viewership for a Saturday night," said the website.
