Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said he would support expanded background checks for gun buyers in some instances, such as people with mental health issues, but, the lawmaker insisted that “universal background checks is a bridge too far for most of us.”

Appearing on “Meet the Press, said that even if issues were addressed such as fathers giving a gun to a child as a gift, other problems remain, such as someone loaning a shotgun to a friend to go hunting.

Flake is also part of the Gang of 8 senators (four Republicans, four Democrats) working on an immigration bill. He said senators still have a way to go to get the exact bill they want, “But we’re closer, certainly.”

Gun Control: Was Harry Reid right to Reject It?

“I think a number of (Republicans) are with us already,” he said.

He admitted that it will be impossible to stop every illegal immigrant from getting across the border, and a lot of legal commerce takes place at the border as well. “We don’t need a sealed border — we need a secure border.”
