Lynn Paltrow on Pregnant Woman on Life Support: Change Law

By    |   Monday, 30 Dec 2013 05:46 PM

A Texas law preventing a family from removing a pregnant woman from life support should be struck down, says Lynn Paltrow, executive director and founder of National Advocates for Pregnant Women.

"The question is whether we live in a country where families have the right and the ability to plan for themselves and their children," Paltrow told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"What the Texas law is saying [to] women [is] . . .everybody else can decide what happens if you become unable to express your wishes about what treatment you do and don't want to have -- except you."

Paltrow was referring to Marlise Munoz — 18 weeks pregnant and brain dead since her husband found her unconscious in their home in November. The family says Munoz is being kept alive despite her wishes never to be hooked up to a machine.

Texas law prohibits pulling the plug on a pregnant woman, regardless of her wishes or how old the fetus is.

"Having separate and unequal laws for groups of people has never gone very well in this country," she said.

"There's absolutely no way to tell, at this point, whether the mechanical support and artificial machine support they're using will result in a healthy birth outcome. We don't know that."
