Judith Miller: NY Times 'Invaluable Institution' Despite Staff Defections

By    |   Friday, 15 Nov 2013 05:25 PM

Pulitzer-winning journalist Judith Miller says she is keeping her fingers crossed that her former newspaper The New York Times continues to flourish in the wake of ongoing staff defections.

"I continue to believe that my old paper, my former paper is an invaluable institution and it is a great news organization," Miller told Joe Concha, guest host of "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"A thousand reporters, editors, people involved in the production of news — there's nothing quite like it."

This week, CNN hired away Times media industry reporter Brian Stelter and Yahoo! News lured Matt Bai, a political correspondent for The New York Times Magazine.

Last month, Times senior editor Richard Berke left to become executive editor of Politico, and in September, Megan Liberman, the Times' deputy news editor, was named Yahoo! News's editor in chief.

And The Times's popular tech columnist David Pogue is joining Yahoo! News.

"I have points that I can be very critical of . . . but it would be a great shame if The New York Times were not able to make its way in this digital new world and if a lot of what passes for news in the form of blogs comes to substitute for it," said Miller, a Newsmax contributor and fellow at the Manhattan Institute.

"People need reliable and impartial, I'm not going to say objective, but a paper that attempts to be impartial."
