Sen. Isakson: Congress 'Should do Everything We Can' to Delay Obamacare

Congress should act to delay or defund Obamacare whether or not such a move is tied to a continuing resolution to fund the federal government, Sen. Johnny Isakson tells Newsmax.

"The Obamacare issue is a very big issue and we should do everything we can to delay its implementation or to defund it in one way or another, whichever we could possibly do," the Georgia Republican told Newsmax TV.

How it's done is of little relevance, he said "as long as it gets done."

Asked if he would be more comfortable voting in favor of budget legislation if it included a resolution to delay the healthcare reform law, Isakson, who sits on the Senate Finance Committee responded, "The answer to that is yes, but you have to also consider what's included in the (continuing resolution)."

As for how an effort by Republican senators to push for defunding Obamacare is faring, Isakson said, "I agree with what they're trying to accomplish. It's the way you accomplish it that makes all of the difference in the world."

He said he hopes senators can find a way to avoid shutting down the government, which he agreed "doesn't make a lot of sense either way."

Isakson also said he thinks it is necessary to adopt a continuing resolution. "We're going to have a reach an agreement on a CR because we don't have time to do what we should've been doing all year long, and that's the appropriations bills prior to October 1," he explained.

"The fiscal year runs out so you either do a CR or the government runs out of money and doesn't have the authorization to continue to operate. So, I don't think not doing a CR is an option. How you get there is the $64,000 question."

Isakson has previously said he has reservations about Larry Summers, considered the front runner to replace Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, and has been joined in that sentiment by several Democrats who favor Fed Vice Chair Janet Yellen.

But Isakson said that does not mean Summers' potential future as Fed chair is over.

"With the way that the White House sits behind and he comes before the Senate Finance Committee and gets a full vetting, I wouldn't want to predict his demise one way or another," he told Newsmax.

"I do have reservations and concerns, as do some of the others. But it's way too early to predict what the end result would be," he said.
