NBC Sports' Briggs: Bullying Occurs in Every Locker Room

Friday, 15 Nov 2013 05:21 PM

Dave Briggs of NBC Sports' "SportsDash" says the bullying charges swirling around Miami Dolphins star Richie Incognito are nothing new in the NFL.

"There's bullying in every locker room. Believe me, I've been in locker rooms for 10 years and there's a lot of it in all of them," Briggs told Joe Concha, guest host of "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It's the culture, it's built into the fabric of the NFL."

Story continues below video.

Briggs believes that the tide of negative press is beginning to focus on Jonathan Martin, the Dolphin who waled away from the team and has accused Incognito of threats and racist comments.

"At first Jonathan Martin was the sympathetic figure, the guy that everyone would welcome back," Briggs said.

"Now, clearly Richie Incognito will have a much easier time returning to an NFL team whether it be the Dolphins or anyone else. Jonathan Martin may never come back to an NFL team because he will not be welcome."

Not that Incognito is a choir boy, according to Briggs.

"Everyone I've spoken to in the NFL, current and former players … the first word out of their mouth is jerk. The guy is a jerk and everybody knows that. But this stuff happens, they knew what they were getting with Richie Incognito," he said.

"Martin broke the code and if you're not tough enough to handle this, there are mechanisms to solve it. Go upstairs, let them know what you're feeling. You don't go outside. And look at what he's created."

Briggs believes Martin is setting the stage for legal action.

"A big lawsuit. That's probably where this ends. His mom is a lawyer going back into workplace harassment issues … and his written columns on workplace harassment," Briggs said.

"It looks like they're laying the groundwork for a lawsuit against the Dolphins, against the NFL. I'd be surprised if it doesn't end that way. This is a guy that does not want to play football. Jonathan Martin does not like the culture. I'm not sure he likes the game of football."
