Canada's David Solway to US: Beware of Single-Payer Healthcare

By    |   Tuesday, 17 Dec 2013 06:44 PM

Americans should beware of single-payer health insurance, which has crippled the healthcare systems of Canada and the United Kingdom and might be more aptly named "Murder Incorporated," Canadian poet and essayist David Solway says.

"Anybody who wants to get good medical care, and medical care in time [in Canada], really has to pay out of his own pocket to go to some of the private clinics that are springing up there clandestinely, unfortunately, or to fly to the United States, where they can get better treatment and far more accelerated treatment," Solway on Tuesday told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It really isn't working all that well. In fact, it's working abominably," Solway said. "For example, the recent scandal at the Stafford Hospital [in England], where it's been discovered 1,300 people have died as a result of poor and substandard care, and this is a single-payer, socialized medical system. This is what you guys are heading for."

Solway, a member of the Jubilate Circle and formerly a teacher of English Literature at John Abbott College, acknowledges there has been "a lot wrong" with the U.S. healthcare system.

"There's a lot wrong with any system in the world. There's a lot wrong with human beings and any kind of system or construction that we create. We're human. We're flawed," he said.

"But the American system, for all its faults, was far superior to what we have here and, obviously, to what they have in England, which is what I call . . . Murder Incorporated."
