Ziad Abdelnour: Obama Must Name US Enemies in Speech

By    |   Wednesday, 10 Sep 2014 02:00 PM

President Barack Obama must call out America's enemies — including Syria and Iran — by name and identify America's friends in his forthcoming speech on the battle against the Islamic State (ISIS), financier and author Ziad Abdelnour told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"Syria is no friend. ISIS is no friend. Iran is no friend. These are not our friends, and we can't beat around the bush here; we have to clearly define them," Abdelnour, president of Blackhawk Partners, told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner.

Obama is expected to use his prime-time national address on Wednesday to justify stepping up U.S. airstrikes and global military action against the group, formerly known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, which has sewn terror across those two countries in a brutal quest to establish an Islamic caliphate on conquered land.

Abdelnour said that another key task of the speech is to "also name your friends" — a category he said includes the Arab League countries willing to help the United States degrade and destroy ISIS.

"Once we have put these two groups into boxes — these are enemies, these are friends — then we can deal with each accordingly," Abdelnour said.

"The devil is in the details," he added. "At the end of the day we cannot have a broad speech talking about restoring the government in Iraq. It has to be much more detailed than that: how to deal with Hezbollah, even; how to deal with Syria, with Iran, with the Sunnis, with the Kurds, with Lebanon . . . The more detailed it is and the more fleshed-out it is, the more successful the speech is going to be."

Abdelnour said the president's reported three-year timeline for defeating ISIS is, in fact, "only the beginning."

"This may take a decade or more," he said, likening ISIS to "an incorrigible child" that refuses to obey.

"You tell the child not to do this, he goes and does it," said Abdelnour. "You punish him, he does it again.

"We have to keep punishing them until they learn the lesson and accept to be part of this civilized group of nations."
