Shackelford: NY School Risks Suit by Denying Christian Club

By    |   Thursday, 09 Oct 2014 11:00 AM

A Long Island, New York, high school is on the hot seat for refusing to allow a Christian service club to form despite permitting 33 other clubs, including a gay-straight alliance and a Frisbee club, Liberty Institute CEO Kelly Shackelford told Newsmax TV's "America’s Forum" on Thursday.

The school district for Ward Melville High School has taken the position that the Students United in Faith club was denied because it did not have the required 20 students to form a co-curricular club. The district also said it did not have the money to pay for an adviser for the club.

"The Frisbee club has an adviser, the gay-straight alliance club has an adviser, but they don't want to give one for the Christian club," Shackelford said. "The idea that if you're a minority group you don't have the First Amendment protection to have your meetings like everybody else."

The district has until today to rectify the situation or the case will go to federal court, according to Shackelford.

"Once you allow one noncurricular club, you then open it up for the other clubs to have the same right to meet,” he said. “I don't know how they're going to respond. I hope they will realize this is going to get them in trouble and will cost the school district money to hire attorneys to try to avoid the federal law."
