Betsy McCaughey: Restrict Flights From West Africa

The United States should restrict air travel from West Africa, but not for those who want to travel to that region, says health policy expert and former New York Lieutenant Gov. Betsy McCaughey.

McCaughey told told J.D. Hayworth and Morgan Thompson on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Friday that she disagrees with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director (CDC) Dr. Thomas Frieden who said that he opposes a travel ban to and from West Africa to try to limit the spread of the Ebola virus.

Frieden said in an opinion piece for Fox News that "a travel ban is not the right answer"  because it could potentially "drive patients with Ebola underground, making it infinitely more difficult to address the outbreak."

But McCaughey explained that "no one is saying that we should stop planes from flying into West Africa, but we should restrict commercial air traffic out of West Africa."

"Healthcare workers who have been nobly laboring in West Africa caring for patients, should not be getting on commercial flights anyway," she said. "Charters and military planes are bringing much of the supplies."

A bipartisan group of lawmakers have come out in support of a travel ban. Twenty-four Republicans and three Democrats sent a letter to President Barack Obama Wednesday making a case for why a travel ban is needed, The Hill Reported

McCaughey said that she's "glad that lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats alike are recognizing the need for this travel ban because there is no reason to subject transportation workers and particularly healthcare workers in this country — nurses and doctors and other people who work in hospitals — to the unreasonable risk of Ebola."

She contends that "our hospitals are not ready to control the spread of Ebola."

The same goes for U.S. airports, she explained.

"They are not well equipped to handle these passengers," the New York Republican said. "Ebola is highly infectious."
