Russian President Vladimir Putin is playing his cards right by not retaliating against the United States following President Barack Obama's ouster of 35 diplomats, conservative political pundit Patrick J. Buchanan tells Newsmax TV.

"In this case, I think Putin is very smart. It was very wise of him, I think, when Obama sent those 35 guys [packing] . . . when he said we're going to let this one pass and we're going to invite the American diplomats and their kids over to the Kremlin for a party," Buchanan said to Steve Malzberg Wednesday on "America Talks Live."

"I think Putin realizes he's got a different man than Obama, that Obama is bitter with him and he had a bad relationship. And I think he and Trump are going to see if they can't work out [something] as two great powers did as they happened under Ronald Reagan."

Obama booted the 35 Russians after U.S. intelligence determined that Putin's government had been involved in the leaking of Democratic Party emails in a bid to influence the presidential election last November.

Buchanan, a senior adviser to Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, said he had accompanied Reagan to Iceland and Switzerland for his first two summits with former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev and took trips with Nixon to Moscow.

"The idea was of these presidents is, look, we want both sides, get their interests, their valid interests respected and at the same time let's avoid the kind of conflict that neither country wants," he told Malzberg.

"I think that's what Trump wants and my guess is that's what Putin wants, but we ought to at least find out."

Buchanan, a senior advisor to Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, is the author of "The Greatest Comeback: How Richard Nixon Rose from Defeat to Create the New Majority," published by Crown Forum.
