Peter Brookes: US Needs Better Security at Canadian Border

By    |   Thursday, 09 Oct 2014 04:59 PM

The United States needs to beef up security at the Canadian border, which has not gotten the same attention as the Mexico border in the war against terror, Peter Brookes, former deputy assistant secretary of defense, said.

"Most people don't realize this, but the Canadian government did their own study. They've got tens of Canadians who are overseas fighting jihads," Brookes said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"I don't want to besmirch the Canadians here, but the fact is we have a northern border and we had a millennial plot coming across the border in the year 2000," Brookes, deputy assistant secretary of state in the George W. Bush administration, said. "We've had other things like attacking trains between  New York and Toronto. There's a lot of things.

"We're living in a dangerous world, the threat vectors are coming from a lot of different directions. We need to be serious about this."

Brookes said President Barack Obama is feeling the heat from his top military advisers on ramping up the U.S. war against the Islamic State (ISIS).

"There's a lot of pressure coming from his senior military advisers about changing the strategy," Brookes said.

"I'm hearing that the president isn't willing to do that at this time."

Brookes, a senior fellow of National Security Affairs at The Heritage Foundation and retired U.S. Navy commander, said the president believes he can "turn up the heat" on the terror group at will.

"In other words, he's thinks he's … going to develop this and do some bombing, but the level of effort is going to be very low," Brookes said.

"The idea here is that maybe we'll get a shot at the leader of this group, (Abu Bakr) al-Baghdadi, and maybe we'll take him out and maybe that'll change things.

"They think this group is a house of cards and if they pull out the right card, the whole thing will come down. They may or may not be right about that."
