Tom DeLay: Trump's Done; Carson or Cruz May Nab Nomination

Donald Trump's shock slide from Republican presidential front-runner to second banana behind Dr. Ben Carson can mean only one thing — the billionaire developer's shot at the GOP nomination is cooked, former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay tells Newsmax TV.

"Trump is on his way out. People have had enough of him, he has no substance, and he's on his way out. That's what I'm seeing," DeLay, a Texas Republican who now hosts a Washington Times radio show, said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

But could Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon who has never been elected to public office, actually grab the Republican nomination? Yes, says, DeLay, as long as he doesn't make the same mistakes as Trump.

"He has a shot at it. He has to really do the same thing that Trump did not do and that's add substance to his message. It's not good enough to just say that I'm a Christian and I'm a neurosurgeon," DeLay said.

"Show us leadership, show us how you would work in the Oval Office, and do you have any knowledge on any of the issues? If he does that, he's got longevity. If not, they'll go to somebody else like [Sen. Ted] Cruz or [Sen. Marco] Rubio."

DeLay believes Cruz has chance of capturing the nomination, but discounts the rest of the low-polling, mainstream GOP candidates.

"I don't think they have much of a chance to be honest with you. The American people, particularly the Republicans, have had enough of establishment. They want bold, constitutional government and none of those candidates are giving it to them," DeLay told Malzberg.
