DeLay to GOP: 'Step Back, Redesign the Message' on Healthcare

Wednesday, 19 Jul 2017 01:44 PM

Republican lawmakers must take a break and seriously rethink their approach to repealing and replacing the Affordable Car Act if they want to avoid another Capitol Hill debacle where nothing is passed, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"Remember, back when [Democrats] wanted to pass Obamacare," DeLay, a Texas Republican said to Newsmax's JD Hayworth.

"They did it on the premise that there were 30 million people without insurance, or without healthcare coverage, and the whole reason was to bring the government in and provide that access and coverage through the government, through subsidies, through bailouts of insurance companies . . .

"The Democrats had a focus, they had a message, and they ultimately prevailed. And they knew that once they passed Obamacare it would be extremely difficult to get rid of it. So the Republicans have to step back, take a deep breath, redesign the message."

And what exactly is that message?

"Access to the free markets and takeaway those inhibitors that get in between the patient and their doctors …" DeLay said.

"That's the message that they need to be focused on so that you can focus people's efforts on what is really important here. And that's to create a free-market access to healthcare."

DeLay also called for stronger leadership in Washington.

"What's missing is the leadership trying to do something that was way beyond their ability to do it. They just don't have the votes to replace one welfare program with another welfare program. It's just not there," he told Hayworth.

"What they've got to do is step back and understand that the American people want to be free, they want to be allowed to make the choices they want to make that's good for their families and redesign the message as we've talked about.

"What's missing here is understanding where the votes are, what your votes look like, and what can you put together that will pass with Republican votes."
