Tom DeLay: Sanders' Supporters Will Flock to Hillary

By    |   Thursday, 05 May 2016 05:58 PM

Tom Delay tells Newsmax TV he believes Hillary Clinton will win the general election because while many Republicans will refuse to vote for Donald Trump, Democrats who support Bernie Sanders will inevitably embrace the former secretary of state as their candidate.

"Twenty to 40 percent of our party is going to stay home because they can't bring themselves to vote for a Donald Trump, a man like that," DeLay, a Texas Republican and former House majority leader, said Thursday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

DeLay reasons that Clinton will garner support of the entire party because Sanders’ supporters are socialists, and "by their very nature, socialists are collective."

"The minute that Hillary is nominated, all those Bernie people are going to come over and support Hillary. The party over there is not even close to being as divided as the Republican Party is," DeLay told Malzberg.

"We've told people in the Republican Party that if you nominate Donald Trump, you're going to have Hillary Clinton as president and a hugely-damaged party. That's what's going to happen."

He added that he believes Trump will eventually dismiss the conservatives who supported him.

"[He’ll say] 'I don't need your help. Go away conservatives.’ That just tells them, 'OK, I'll stay home. You think you can do all this on your own? Go after it,'" DeLay said.

Dislike for Trump is strong in the Republican establishment.

Both George H.W. Bush and his son George W. Bush said through a spokesman Thursday they have no plans to endorse the billionaire developer. And House Speaker Paul Ryan, who said earlier that he would support the GOP nominee, now says he’s not ready to come out for Trump as yet.

On Wednesday, Politico reported that billionaire industrialists and conservative GOP donors Charles and David Koch are so disenchanted with Trump that they are weighing supporting Clinton.
