Ill. Lawmaker: Don't Let Terrorists Teach in Public Schools

By    |   Wednesday, 04 Feb 2015 11:37 AM

An Illinois legislator who has introduced a bill to bar convicted terrorists from teaching in public schools said Wednesday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV that while it seems like a no-brainer, the University of Illinois employs a terrorist as an instructor.

"We don't let sex offenders teach our youth in our colleges or in our high schools, so why should we let convicted terrorists be out there teaching our youth?" said Rep. Charlie Meier.

Illinois House Bill 150 came about as the result of the employment of former Symbionese Liberation Army member James Kilgore by the University of Illinois, according to Meier.

After some 30 years on the run following his part in a 1975 bank robbery that resulted in a woman’s death, Kilgore was caught in 2002 in South Africa, where he had been living under an alias. The FBI brought him back to the United States, where Kilgore was convicted of second-degree murder and possessing explosive devices, Meier said.

"When he got out of jail, he was hired by the University of Illinois and we have lost many of our major donors to the University of Illinois because of this," he said. "Our tax dollars are paying the hired terrorists that teach our youth."

The left-wing Symbionese Liberation Army is the same terrorist organization that kidnapped newspaper heiress Patty Hearst and committed bank robberies and other violent acts.

The Daily Caller reports that Kilgore is an adjunct instructor of global studies and urban planning at the university.

Meier said he has not heard from any teachers unions or the governor about their positions on the bill, but that support from the public has thus far been positive.

"Many people are rallying around saying how did this ever happen," he said. "The common sense part of it, the working people in Illinois, seem to like this bill."

"Our tax dollars paying for this education and it just doesn't seem right that we're fighting terrorists around the world and yet we hire them."
