Rep. Ted Poe: We Shouldn't Fund Obama's 'Illegal Act' on Amnesty

By    |   Tuesday, 10 Feb 2015 10:43 AM

Whether or not you agree with President Barack Obama's executive order summarily legalizing some 5 million people, it was an illegal act that violated the Constitution and should not be funded by Congress, Texas Rep. Ted Poe said Monday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"It's not an immigration issue, it's an issue of whether the president can get away with illegal actions in violation of the Constitution and then get money to pay for that, and the answer should be no," Poe said.

The House has proposed a budget that funds the Department of Homeland Security, with the exception of "the illegal act of the president," Poe said. It will be left to the president whether to "sign legislation that funds the rest of the security of the United States and not fund his illegal act."

Poe said House lawmakers remain uncertain about whether the Senate will stand with them in refusing to provide any funding for executive amnesty.

"We're not sure whether we will end up having two different pieces of legislation, have to go to a conference committee or not," he said. "We haven't gotten that far yet. But the House should stand its ground and make sure that we do not appropriate money that we don't have for the action of the president."

U.S. authorities could contain the border in less than five years — the time frame laid out in a House Homeland Security Committee bill passed last month — if the Obama administration had the "moral will" to do so, he said.

"The government, administration, doesn't have that moral will to do it," Poe said. "We secure the borders of other countries, why don't we do our own? It could take less than five years, absolutely."
