Cruz: Dems Attack Against Sessions Ugly and Unfair

By    |   Wednesday, 11 Jan 2017 09:20 PM

Sen. Ted Cruz blasted Senate Democrats who grilled Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions during a Wednesday confirmation hearing on his nomination as attorney general – telling Newsmax TV the questions were "ugly" and unfair.

In an interview with Joe Pagliarulo on "The Joe Pags Show," the Texas Republican said the partisan attacks fueled a "biased" presentation.

"Some of the Democratic senators chose to be ugly and go after Jeff personally and that's despite serving in this body with him, sitting on that bench just a few seats away from him," Cruz said.

"They nonetheless went after him and tried to impugn Jeff's integrity. I think it was done in a way that wasn't fair and wasn't accurate and one of the things I tried to do in the Senate, especially in the Judiciary Committee in the confirmation hearing, is ensure that the facts are fairly presented… so that you don't a one-sided or biased presentation."

But Cruz said he was relieved by New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker "refrained from some of the more vile and overheated accusations."

"It's not lost on anyone that Cory is ambitious," he said. "I think the Democratic base, the left wing is worked up in a lather and they wanted to see people go after Jeff Sessions. They're angry about the election. They're angry that Hillary [Clinton] lost. …"

"I think Cory's remarks today were designed to appease his base," he said. "I will say I was gratified even though I wish he hadn't broken two centuries of precedent and testified against a fellow senator in a confirmation hearing. I was nonetheless gratified that Cory showed some restraint. He could've been much, much uglier."

Cruz also hailed "achieving what we've been promising the American people for six years now" – a quick repeal of Obamacare. The replacement, he conceded, however, could take "months."

"I think it is possible we can find ourselves spending much of this year engaged in … debates if the Democrats decide to be full obstructionists," he said.

And Cruz said he is "hopeful" about his measure calling for a a constitutional amendment to mandate term limits – two terms for senators, and three terms for members of the House."

"Donald Trump campaigned on draining the swamp," Cruz said. "I think there are few more effective ways to do that than term limits…"
