Tea Party Activist: US Returning to Its Conservative Roots

By    |   Monday, 16 Mar 2015 04:24 PM

The United States is slowly returning to its roots as a conservative, Constitution-abiding nation — but there is much more work to be done, Tea Party Patriots co-founder Mark Meckler tells Newsmax TV.

"We are starting to take our country back and I'm really pleased by that," Meckler said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"We're doing it via the state elections … You currently have Republicans now in control of a larger majority [in state legislatures] … than any time since the 1920s, governorships controlled by Republicans with a larger majority [than] since the '20s.

"Things are working better in the states now than they have in a long time. We're going to see that start to filter its way up."

But Meckler, president of Citizens for Self Governance, said the ultimate solution is by rebalancing power by calling an Article V Convention for proposing amendments to "restrain the tyranny and the growth" of the federal government.

A constitutional convention can be called when two-thirds of the nation's state legislatures file petitions with Congress. Less government control and demand for a balanced budget are among the issues that can be brought up under the Article V rule.

Meckler said many lawmakers believe President Barack Obama is violating the Constitution with his use of executive power to circumvent Congress.

"It's their duty to act in some way to prevent his actions, not necessarily impeachment, but certainly it's their duty to prevent what they believe to be unconstitutional actions," he said.

"They have other means at their disposal, which they're not using. The House of Representatives was always intended to be the most powerful branch of government. It is because they have the power of the purse."

But Meckler said the Republican-controlled Congress is refusing to exercise that power.
"The question you would have to ask yourself then is, do we have the wrong guys in Congress? Is it the structure? Is it the president?" he said.

"I would argue that we have a structural impediment. We have created structurally an imbalance by 100 years of bad court decisions that allow the president to do pretty much what he wants, Congress to do what they want …

"Only the people can fix that … Congress won't fix it … You have to have a fix that goes around Congress and around the president if you're going to fix these structural problems that we're facing."
