Rep. Steve Russell: Government's Wasteful Spending Tops $117M

By    |   Wednesday, 15 Apr 2015 11:19 AM

Oklahoma Rep. Steve Russell hopes that the light shined on government waste in the Waste Watch report released last week will be in time to affect authorizations and appropriations, he said Wednesday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV.

Russell is carrying on the tradition of retired Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn with the Waste Watch report, which exposes frivolous government spending.

Russell’s report documents more than $117 million in wasteful spending, including "Gatsby-esque parties in Pennsylvania, training facilities in Afghanistan that literally melted in the rain, and even an anti-U.S. movie," according to a news release from his office.

"We just shake our heads at the different things," Russell said. "Everything from melting walls on a shooting house that was built for training in Afghanistan as the rains came, it literally melted — hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted there — and we got parts being stored for $8,000."

Pointed letters are being written to the State Department asking why taxpayer money is funding things such as Afghan bailouts and Iraqi filmmakers who made an anti-American film, according to Russell.

"We are looking to hold contractors accountable, like the one that built this sham range in Afghanistan. We are trying to affect it, not just identify it," he said.

Russell also wants more information about a $100 million gap in a bailout from the State Department to Afghanistan to help ease the budget crisis there.

"We're going to be asking the State Department how the Afghan government will make up for that money. Although we want to continue to work with our allies in Afghanistan, we must be accountable," he said.
