Rabbi Boteach: US Needs to Lead World in ISIS Battle — Now!

Tuesday, 21 Apr 2015 05:06 PM

Horrifying videos of Christian slaughter by the Islamic State (ISIS) are so commonplace they have lost their shock value, says Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, founder of The Jewish Values Network.

And the escalating bloodshed is a clear indication that the United States must take the world lead in combating the radical Muslim terror group.

"There's an attempted ISIS genocide against Christians … as the world yawns and looks aside, and it's astonishing," Boteach said Tuesday to Rick Ungar, guest host of "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We live in an era where mass murder and the slaughter of innocents has become so commonplace every day that it doesn't even illicit a response."

Last week, ISIS released a 29-minute video in which at least 30 Ethiopian Christians are marched onto a beach in Libya and beheaded and shot.

"Isn't it amazing to see a video like that where they actually portray quite literally the ocean turning red and people do nothing?" said Boteach, who is known as "America's Rabbi."

"It's a sad commentary in the state of affairs in our society that this doesn't even shock us."

Boteach said little will be done as long as the U.S. government remains noncommittal about stopping the mass killings.

"We have a president who has no hatred of evil … The American people have the most deep-seated sense of morality. We are the greatest country on earth," he said.

"This stuff sickens us and we are astonished that our president allows the world to continue to burn and be on fire."

"If America doesn't lead, the rest of the world is not going to follow. We're the world's leader."

Boteach said that the rest of the world is using U.S. inaction on ISIS as an excuse not to act themselves.

"They know that we have the most deep-seated sense of morality, much more than Europe, that has kind of overlooked these atrocities for the longest time," Boteach told Ungar.

"Let's remember how many genocides took place on European soil, whether it was Turks and the Ottomans and whether it was the Holocaust and the Jews and whether it was former Yugoslavia, Kosovo, etc.

"If we're not outraged, the rest of the world is going to look at our inaction … as an excuse to be inactive themselves."

Boteach's group, The Jewish Values Network, is committed to bringing Jewish values to mainstream culture.
